Pastoral Reflection for 4.26.15
Dear Flock of God,
This week we're talking about what 1 Peter has to say about the leaders of the church - elders. I have found that many Christians don't know how to interact with their church elders, especially those who are full-time vocational elders or "pastors." So, here are 4 ways that you can relate to the position of "elder."
- Aspire - 1 Timothy 3:1 says that "whoever aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task." This verse tells us that it is a good thing to be ambitious, especially when we desire to lead in the local church. So, if you find yourself drawn toward the office of elder, do two thing: First, read 1 Timothy 3 and see if you qualify. Second, let one of the current elders know so we can start walking you through the process!
- Honor - Hebrews 13:17 tells us to obey & submit to our elders because they keep watch us, and they will have to give an account to God for our souls. The men who are elders at CoaH are given the responsibility and privilege of caring for your soul. Please, let us do it! Don't be a lone ranger. Don't try to figure it out yourself. If you're looking for direction, talk to a pastor/elder! If you have questions about the Bible or doctrine, reach out to a pastor/elder!
- Encourage/Pray - The work of leading a church can be draining. As the shepherds of this church, we spend much of our time with the sick and straying sheep who can be draining and challenging. Pray for us, that God would use us, that we would be humble and depend upon him. And as you see the Lord working in our lives, don't be afraid to point that out for encouragement!
- Befriend - Being a pastor can be lonely. It can even be lonely for the wife and family of a pastor. For some reason, it's hard for many people to relate to their pastors in the same way they would relate to their other friends. Becoming friends with your pastor (or their family) could be a good thing for yourself, but an even better thing for them!
